CAW vs PC WORLD - Law Case Study

CAW vs PC WORLD - Law Case Study CAW vs PC WORLDCaseStraight out, this case is about the "duty to bargain in good faith", unfair labour practices.CAW-Local 127, the applicant, claimed that PC World the responding party, that they engaged in bad faith bargaining, and requested a number of remedies for the alleged breach. PC World denied it had breached the Act, and was seeking the dismissal of these applications. The Boards decision after hearing from both sides: a) is that the January 8, 1997 proposal made by PC World has been extinguished by the passage of time; b) that PC World did violate the obligation to bargain in good faith and to make every reasonable effort to reach a collective agreement; c) that PC World's proposal of April 18, 1997, appears to have been designed to be rejected by the Union and its members; d) the parties are directed to return to bargaining forthwith to bargain in good faith and to make every reasonable effort that reach a collective agreement.English: PC World, Kensington High Street, Lo ndon....PC World was stating that their January 8th proposal was removed off the table, where the Union stated that the offer was still valid and it was never removed. So PC World, due to a lengthy strike, the offer should be considered to have elapsed. In the Board's decisions after reviewing the evidence decided that PC World never told the Union on January 8th that if a strike commenced that the last offer was off the table. That if the offer had been withdrawn and they did not notify the Union, then the employer had failed to bargain in good faith because both sides never met again until April 16, 1997.From the commencement of the strike the Union persistently asked and pleaded to meet with the employer to recommence bargaining.

10 Cool Facts About Lithium

10 Cool Facts About Lithium Here are some facts about lithium, which is element atomic number 3 on the periodic table. Lithium is the third element in the periodic table, with 3 protons and the element symbol Li.  It has an atomic mass of 6.941.  Natural lithium is a mixture of two stable isotopes (Lithium-6 and Lithium-7).  Lithium-7 accounts for over 92% of the natural abundance of the element.Lithium is an alkali metal.  It is silver-white in pure form and so soft it can be cut with a butter knife.  It has one of the lowest melting points and a high boiling point for a metal.Lithium metal burns white, though it imparts a crimson color to a flame.  This is the characteristic that led to its discovery as an element.  In the 1790s, it was known that the mineral petalite  (LiAISi4O10)  burned crimson in a fire. By 1817, the Swedish chemist  Johan August Arfvedson had determined the mineral contained an unknown element responsible for the colored flame. Arfvedson named the element, although he was unable to purify it as a pure metal. It wasnt until 1855 that British chemist  Augus tus Matthiessen and German chemist Robert Bunsen finally managed to purify lithium from lithium chloride. Lithium does not occur free in nature, though it is found in nearly all igneous rocks and in mineral springs.  It was one of three elements produced by the Big Bang, along with hydrogen and helium. However, the pure element is so reactive its only found naturally bonded to other elements to form compounds.  The natural abundance of the element in the Earths crust is about 0.0007%. One of the mysteries surrounding lithium is that the amount of lithium believed to have been produced by the Big Bang is about three times higher than what scientists see in the oldest stars.  In the Solar System, lithium is much less common than 25 of the first 32 chemical elements, probably because the atomic nucleus of lithium is practically unstable, with two stable isotopes possessing extremely low binding energies per nucleon.Pure lithium metal is extremely corrosive and requires special handling.  Because it reacts with air and water, the metal is stored under oil or enclosed in an inert atmo sphere. When lithium catches fire, the reaction with oxygen makes it difficult to extinguish the flames. Lithium is the lightest metal  and the least dense solid element, with a density about half that of water. In other words, if lithium did not react with water (which it does, somewhat vigorously), it would float.Among other uses, lithium is used in medicine, as a heat transfer agent, for making alloys, and for batteries. Although lithium compounds are known to stabilize mood, scientists still dont know the exact mechanism for the effect on the nervous system. What is known is that reduces activity of the receptor for the neurotransmitter dopamine and that it can cross the placenta to affect an unborn child. The transmutation of lithium to tritium was the first man-made nuclear fusion reaction. The name for lithium comes from Greek lithos which means stone. Lithium occurs in most igneous rocks, although it does not occur free in nature.Lithium metal is made by electrolysis of fused lithium chloride.

Entrepreneurship Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Entrepreneurship - Assignment Example No matter whether the business is manufacturing or supplying technology products or not, it has become extremely important that businesses in today’s rigorously competitive market landscape have to take in to account the technology especially when it decides on location. For manufacturing and retailing of fashionable household goods, communication, fashion designing and other technological factors seem to have greater significant roles in the business. The firm needs latest and advanced technology for manufacturing, designing, architecture, furnishing, layouts, developing electrical appliances, marketing etc and therefore accessibility and availability of technology seem to be critically important determinant while choosing the right location for the business. Mareno, Castillo and Masere emphasized that the location decision for a retail business largely depends on technology factors such as communication and network facilities too. The contemporary business environment is gre atly influenced by competition for which technology is the leading factor and therefore technology is the most important factor that determines the competitiveness of a business (Dosi, Teece and Chytry, 1998, p. 3) 2- Retail Compatibility While choosing the location, it is important for a fashionable household retailer to foresee which out of the two options- being single-free standing and being one among a cluster of businesses in all the projected cities namely Bristol, Plymouth, Exeter and Bournemouth- will be profitable and successful. Shopping malls and shopping centers attract large numbers of customers but a single-standing shop attracts relatively less customers. Retail compatibility refers to the maximum advantages that a retailer is able to enjoy by locating its business near to other shoppers (Zimmerer, Scarborough and Wilson, 2008, p. 528). Two compatible retailers within a close proximity area will certainly show increased sale with a direct proportionate customer inter change between them (Akehurst and Alexander, 1996, p. 109). For a start up business, retail compatibility is an important factor to be considered while thinking about the location. Shopping malls or centers attract huge numbers of customers and have to spend less on advertising. 3- Competition and customer traffic A particular business location will be saturated by many competitors and the business

MGR #6 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

MGR #6 - Essay Example A prayer is a religious expression of thanks or a request for help addressed to God or an object. According to this MGR prayers are not only concerned off wellbeing of the one praying, but the will of God to be done according to his wishes. Prayers are a communication between a human being and God. It is through this communication that human have  faith that their wishes will be answered. People pray for different reasons which include blessings, healing, and guidance. My second takeaway is confession. Confessions are statements made by a group of people or a person acknowledging personal facts that the group or the person would ostensibly prefer to keep hidden. Confession is one way of repentance. The main thing that leads to confessions is when a person sin. A sin is anything that come  between  the right ways of God and a person. One of the major drives to confession is fear. It keeps us away from enjoying our freedom until we confess our sins. Another reason for confession is to seek forgiveness. A human can feel guilty after a sin and, as a result, we tend to look for forgiveness from God or other people by confessing our

Its all about life Essay Example for Free

Its all about life Essay Life is beautiful but not always easy, it has problems, too, and the challenge lies in facing them with courage, letting the beauty of life act like a balm, which makes the pain bearable, during trying times, by providing hope Happiness, sorrow, victory, defeat, day-night are the two sides of the me coin. Similarly life is full of moments of joy, pleasure, success and comfort punctuated by misery, defeat, failures and problems. There is no human being on Earth, strong, powerful, wise or rich, who has not experienced, struggle, suffering or failure. No doubt, life is beautiful and every moment – a celebration of being alive, but one should be always ready to face adversity and challenges. A person who has not encountered difficulties in life can never achieve success. Difficulties test the courage, patience, perseverance and true character of a human being. Adversity and hardships make a person strong and ready to face the challenges of life with equanimity. There is no doubt that there can be no gain without pain. It is only when one toils and sweats it out that success is nourished and sustained. Thus, life is and should not be just a bed of roses; thorns are also a part of it and should be accepted by us just as we accept the beautiful side of life. The thorns remind one of how success and happiness can be evasive and thus not to feel disappointed and disheartened rather remember that the pain of thorns is short-lived, and the beauty of life would soon overcome the prick of thorns. Those, who are under the impression that life is a bed of roses are disillusioned soon and become victims of depression and frustration. One who faces difficulties with courage and accepts success without letting it go to its head is the one who experience real happiness, contentment and peace in  life. Those, who think, that good times last forever, easily succumb to pressure during difficulties. They do not put in required hard work and efforts because they break down easily. You can take the example of a student, who burns the mid night oil, makes sacrifices and resists temptations so that he can perform well. Similarly, a successful executive has to face the ups and downs of life, not forgetting that life is a mix of success and failure, joy and sorrow. If he loses hope during difficult times, he would not achieve success and would be replaced by others. Even the strongest Kings and Emperors have had their cup of woes. Life has not been a bed of roses for them. The adage ‘Uneasy lays the head that wears the crown’ has been rightly used for people, who are successful and are enjoying power and authority. To sum up, life is beautiful just as roses but it has challenges which are like thorns and have to be faced and overcome by all. Those, who accept these, challenges and succeed, are the ones, who know how to live life in its true sense. Thus, enjoy life but also be prepared to bear the pricks of pain.

Charles Herreshoff :: Biography Biographical Essays

Charles Herreshoff After Agnes Muller died in the cold Prussian winter of 1766, her three-year-old son was alone in the world. It was said later, though there was no proof, that Agnes’s husband Corporal Eschoff went mad with grief – surely only that could have explained his subsequent abandonment both of his post as bodyguard to Frederick the Great and of his only child. In any case, he disappeared forever, leaving his former townsfolk with only the vague notion that he had "gone to Italy." The boy’s childhood has been lost to the past. An account written two centuries later by a descendant suggests that he lived with maiden aunts until the age of eight, when the women sent him to live with a professor in Potsdam. This, the account explains, is how the boy finally met Frederick the Great – the monarch consulted with the boy’s professor. Another, more sordid tale mentions the rumors that Frederick himself had fathered the child. Frederick, the story goes, was completely impotent and thus flattered by the suggestion. And so, this version continues, partly out of pride and partly as a joking revenge for the desertion of his bodyguard Corporal Eschoff, the emperor took the boy under his wing and sent him to a school for the children of nobles, equipped with the names of two kings and a surname that meant "lord of the manor": Karl Friederich Herreschoff. What is certain is that Karl Friederich left his native Prussia for the United States around 1786. This voyage across the Atlantic marked the beginning of a metamorphosis: that of Karl Friederich Herreschoff, uncertain but cultured young immigrant, into Charles Frederick Herreshoff, promising young merchant. Charles struggled for a decade in his adopted country, first starting his own firm and going bankrupt; eventually, he went to work for a mercantile firm where wealthy and successful John Brown was a senior partner. The young man’s pleasant demeanor and charm, as well as his talent for good conversation and elegant music, are mentioned in more than one account. He had no good family name and no money other than what the firm paid him – but he had personality, and he hoped that would be enough to catch the eye of Brown’s much-beloved younger daughter, Sarah. By 1798, Charles appears to have already made some kind of declaration to the young woman he affectionately called Sally.

Change and Continuity 1492-1750 Essay

An example of continuity during this time period is how Spain continued to try to spread Christianity. They spread Christianity to the Americas in an attempt to convert them from â€Å"savages†. They expelled anyone who did not follow their religion just as Spain had for years. Conquistadors continued to spread this religion throughout the New World and also killed any opposition. One example of a change during this time period could be the introduction of the Triangular Trading Route which connected the Americas to Africa and Europe. The implication of this new system of trade was completely new to the natives of the Americas and brought them new goods. The implementation of the new trading route had a primarily negative effect on the natives of the Americas in the sense that it introduced new diseases to the Americas to which the natives were not immune. The reason they were not immune to these diseases was because they were never exposed to them and therefore had no opportunity to build up and immunity to them. These diseases ranged from small pox to measles. They killed millions of natives. This also lead to the start of the slave trade so that a new labor force could be used. Another example of change during this time period could be how the natives of the New World were forced into Christianity by the Catholic country of Spain. Originally, the natives of the Americas practiced a polytheistic religion which included human sacrifice, cannibalism, and of course multiple gods. When the Spanish arrived to the New World, they were appalled to see the rituals of these natives and thereby forced them into the monotheistic religion of Christianity. The way they thought Christianity was they took a child and educated them on the ways of Christianity and then sent the child back to the tribe to spread the ideas of Christianity. Zheng He could have discovered the Americas in as early as 1405, because he had the technology but he instead traveled around the Indian Ocean. If he had discovered the Americas, he could have made China a world power and spread the chinese culture to the Americas. Yet another example of change during the time period of 1492 to 1750 was the introduction of the encomienda system in the New World. The encomienda system is a form of feudalism introduced to the New World by Spain from the 1400s to the 1700s. The Spaniards would be paid by the native population for â€Å"protection†. The initial goal of the encomienda system was to spread Christianity throughout the New World. As stated previously they spread the religion by taking one child and teaching him to read, write, and comprehend the Christian religion. They would send the child back and instruct him to spread the religion. This forced the natives to convert to the Christian religion. The Spaniards offered little to no protection to the native population, but rather exploited them. The natives acted as a free labor force making Spain richer than ever before. This lead to yet another example of change, a dramatic reduction in the native population due to poor working conditions. Millions more died due to disease and violence inflected upon them by the Spaniards. In the end the native population was reduced by over 150 million. This also lead to an increase in the need for a labor force and so the Atlantic Slave Trade was introduced. In its time millions of Africans will be transported via boat and those who died or became sick on the treacherous voyage would simply be dumped overboard. The reason African slaves were a safe alternative to the Natives of the Americas was because they were immune to many diseases that that had wiped out the Natives of the Americas. That is why Africans were a more reliable slave labor force. This is why even though the time period of 1492 to 1750 had a lot of continuities, it had more changes.

â€Å"A multi-cultural society is a blessing†. This is an assertion alleged by many. But is it true? Does the old regulation â€Å"The more, the better† really count here? And what on earth is a multi-cultural society? A multi-cultural society is a society containing several representations of different cultures. To understand it better, we also will need to be aware of what both a society and a culture really is. According to Wikipedia, a society is: a population of humans characterized by patterns of relationships between individuals that share a distinctive culture and/or institutions. And then you have a culture, which is a way of life, including traditions, manners, eating habits, and not least beliefs and religion, which I am going to go further into. This list could go on forever, but for you sake, it will not, this time. So there you have the basics. Now, let us dive deeper into to whether this plea is true or not. From my point of view, or let us say from the article’s point of view, the whole world’s population together not only forms one, great society, but a multi-society. And in this society, there are Native Indians, Africans, Asians, poor people, rich people Christians and Buddhists, and so on. You will properly wonder how and where all these cultures originated. Well, the first points I guess you can imagine yourselves. But when we move on to religion, it all comes down to the East, thousands of years before Christ. This is also the origin of God or gods, as many of us still believe in. Polytheism, Pantheism and Monotheism are considered being the first beliefs with religious attributes as we know it today. These phenomenas have evolved, and also created new types of beliefs, and these beliefs, or religions, are the main differences between the global cultures. So now we can start discussing the phrase â€Å"A multi-society is a blessing†, with religion as a key word. All known religions promote peace, and tells us to avoid violence at all costs. Still, I will claim and blame religion for most of the wars and conflicts ever occurred on this planet. If you study deeply into the reasons of many of the greatest wars, you will discover that different perspectives on life, beliefs, will be involved in the cause of  the terrifying violence. When people have different beliefs, they also have different opinions of what is right and wrong. Therefore, there will be misunderstandings, resulting conflicts. Now how can we avoid these conflicts erupting? As Martin Luther King said; it is natural to fear the unknown, therefore, get to know the unknown, and each other’s standpoint. (Magnus Pettersen, last paragraph. Note: This is not an exact quote of Martin Luther King, only a pointer.) But of course, now I make religion sound like the root to all evil, and that it only destroys the society, which it is not right. Religion can be a good thing too, it only depends on what you make out of it. I myself am an atheist, a person who does not believe in any god or over natural power, and I got to admit, I long for the comfort of â€Å"knowing† that when I die, I will be reborn, or end up in heaven. So it is understandable that people search for this calmness in different religions. You too properly believe in something, even if you do not consider yourself as religious. So to the question, what good does religions do to our society? It adds several perspectives on why we humans are here, what the meaning of life is and what happens to us after death, questions that are healthy for us to wonder about. It also teaches us, as mentioned before, to live in peace, and avoid violence. After all, most religions have their core maxim â€Å"Treat others the same way you want them to treat you†. (Bible, Luke 6:31) I think we can conclude that a multi-culture both can be a blessing, and a living hell. It all depends on how literally you take your own, and other’s culture, if you are open for other’s points of views, and if you can live knowing that people around you always will have different ways to live their own life. The effects of the Pollyanna Principle when remembering and recalling pleasant and unpleasant words.

The effects of the Pollyanna Principle when remembering and recalling pleasant and unpleasant words. The Pollyanna Principle is defined by Matlin (2006) with respect to memory and other cognitive processes as pleasant items are usually processed more efficiently and more accurately than less pleasant items. This was consequently named the Pollyanna Principle after the fictional character Pollyanna who was known to look on the bright side of life and to find goodness out of every environment and situation (Warr, 1971, as cited in Sargent, 2005). Numerous studies have also supported this fact by illustrating that people tend to display optimistic beliefs of themselves (Larwood Whittaker, 1977; Svenson, 1981, as cited in Silvera, Krull Sassler, 2002) and the external world around them (Klar Gilda, 1997, as cited in Silvera et al., 2002).One of the basis arising from the Pollyanna Principle contend that people are more accurate in learning and the subsequent recall of words that are found as pleasant in comparison to words that are found as less pleasant and neutral (Sargent, 2005).A graph demonstrating the serial position effect

Millions of people in more than 140 countries play soccer. The World Cup is held every four years. Soccer is one of the most famous international sports. Soccer is known world wide and is played in the Olympics. In a soccer game there are two teams of 11 players who try to score a point by kicking a ball into the opponents net. Soccer is played on a rectangular field with a net on each short side of the field. All players must hit the ball with their feet or body and only the goalie is allowed to touch the ball with his/her hands. There are many things you can do to condition yourself to play. Soccer the way we play it came from England in the 1800’s. Soccer was not that popular until the mid-1900s. Today soccer is very popular and it is one of the nations fastest-growing sports. There are many exercises and drills you can do to improve how you play soccer. There is also many physical conditioning that players can do. Soccer can help you stay fit and healthy. Many people can play soccer and benefit from it. Soccer is very fun and a great recreational sport. History of the Activity Games similar to soccer were played in China as early as 400 BC. In about 200 AD the Romans played a game in which two teams tried to score by advancing a ball across a line on the field. The Romans passed the ball to one another but they never kicked it. London children in about 1100 played a form of soccer in the streets. During the 1800’s the people of England played a game similar to soccer. Many rules changed and each person interpreted the rules differently. In 1848 a group of school representatives met at Trinity College in Cambridge and drew up the first of soccer rules. In 1863 English soccer clubs founded the Football Association. By the late 1800’s soccer began to spread to the rest of the world. The Canadian Soccer Association was established in 1912 while the United States Soccer Federation was set up in 1913. The first World Cup Championship was in Montevideo, Uruguay. Since then it has been played every four years except during WWII. During the 1970’s soccer grew to be a very popular spectator sport as well as participant sport. A soccer game begins with a kickoff in the center of the field. A coin is flipped to decide which team will kickoff. The other team kicks off at the start of the second half when the teams switch sides or nets. After a team scores the other team gets to kickoff to begin again. The kickoff takes place in the middle of the field. When the ball is kicked it must travel the circumference of the ball and touch another player before the kicker can touch the ball again. After the ball is in play it remains in play unless it crosses a goal line or a touch line. All players attempt to stop the ball from coming in their zone while at the same time trying to score a goal. A player may kick the ball into the net with any part of the body except the hands and arms. If the ball goes out of bounds the play is restarted with a corner kick, a goal kick, or a throw-in. The referee decides what type to use. If the ball crosses the goal line and the defensive team touched it last then there is a corner kick by the offense. If the offense touches the ball last and crosses the goal line then it is a goal kick. A throw in happens when the ball crosses the touch line. When it crosses the touch line the team that did not touch it last throws the ball in bounds. The ball is thrown over their head with two hands. Fouls are called when a player does not obey the rules and acts unsportsman-like. When a foul is called the opposite team receives either a penalty kick, a direct free kick or and indirect free kick. Physical Conditioning There are many exercises that people can do to improve in soccer. Exercises that strengthen your legs and improve flexibility are ideal. Physical conditioning is important if you plan on being good at soccer. Here are five exercises that are ideal for soccer: Running: running helps to improve cardiovascular fitness. In soccer there is lots of running for the ball so endurance and a speed is a must. Leg Stretches: using weights can help strengthen the legs. Using weights makes you kick harder and makes the ball travel farther, as a result you become a better player. Leg Machines: exercising all muscles in the leg makes you kick harder and prevents injury when you are diving all over for the ball. The strong muscles help prevent injuries. Stretching: stretching allows you to be more flexible. Sometimes soccer players need to kick the ball in the most awkward positions. Flexibly helps the player to kick the ball in those positions more effectively. Weight Training: all around weight training makes a soccer player even better. A stronger body helps prevent injury and improve all around performance. Practice Drills help the soccer player be more skillful and a better player. There are many drills that can be done. Drills like dribbling to head butting are often used. Some of these drills include: Practicing kicking the ball is a very important and often done drill. To practice the player will kick the ball into the net. Often there is a goalie that they try to score on. Kicking is the most important skill in soccer. Practicing will make your kick stronger and more controllable. Passing is also a very important skill. One drill that can be done is to run side by side with another player and pass the ball back and forth. This skill will improve your passing and receiving skills. Passing is also vital in the game of soccer. Heading is one of the only ways to legally hit the ball when it high in the air. With another player heading can be practiced. One player throws the ball high over top of the other player. The player then will jump up and hit the ball with his forehead and try to control the ball. Heading is very hard and often lots of practice is required. Control of the ball is also very important. By setting up pylons in any order and distance and weaving through them in a pattern like formation can improve your control of the ball. Trying to go quick can also improve your speed of running while dribbling a ball. One on one practice improves both your dribbling and tackling. With two players one is given the ball and must keep the ball away from the other player. While one player is improving his faking and dribbling the other is practicing his defense and tackling. When this drill is done often it can improve your offense as well as defense. Soccer can be done in many age groups. Children often play the sport in school as early as elementary school. Many adults also play the sport. Seniors rarely play soccer because of the easiness it is for them to get injured. Soccer is often very demanding. Soccer for many kids can be very fun. Most children don’t think of soccer as work and often enjoy playing soccer. Adults also sometimes find soccer fun and even some adults have careers in the area as a professional soccer player. Soccer is very valuable in obtaining â€Å"life long† fitness. Soccer can be a very demanding sport. Soccer can improve your cardiovascular fitness as well as strength and flexibility. All the physical conditioning and practice drills are very important in keeping fit. Soccer players are able to be healthy and strong because of the physical involvement. Association Football and B. Specialised nursing Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Specialised nursing - Essay Example His care management needs will be complicated his diagnoses of autism, depression, and gastric cancer. The delivery of care will follow mainly the care pathway of mental health nursing with inclusion of elements in palliative care for gastric cancer. Evidence: People with autistic disorder have significantly increased rates of depression and bipolar affective disorder. Diagnosis of psychiatric disorders is more easily made in those who are verbal than in those who are severely handicapped, and therefore diagnosis, monitoring, and communication would be very challenging with John while conducting his care (Ghaziuddin, Ghaziuddin, and Greden, 2002, 299-306). Most patients with gastric cancer present in an advanced state. It has been found that palliative surgery is the only possible way. He is facing death without knowing its implications. From the nursing perspective, one of the main reasons for measuring the patient satisfaction is to provide information to facilitate care, which is impossible in this patient. For autistic patients admission to a hospital may be detrimental due to fear of exposure. The care management must consider nursing him in a special quiet room near the nursing station with frequent monitoring (Aylott, 200 4, 828-833). Palliation is an emerging model of care that emphasizes the supportive role of healthcare practitioners throughout illness with the main strategy being symptomatic control with the care being holistic so that suffering can be relieved at all stages of the illness (Dell et al., 2008, 177-182). Autistic persons with depression often show an increase in social withdrawal. When depression sets in, the level of isolation and withdrawal gradually increases. The problem may arise in the area of communication, which is an essential part of holistic care. It is important to note that the patients with autism are difficult to manage, and the care planning and management becomes more difficult in the given situation. Due only to his autism, he can become anxious and agitated when his routine environment changes. His admission to the hospital creates such a situation, since hospital is an unfamiliar environment for him. Special care must be taken to ensure an optimum care environme nt (Aylott, 2001, 166-172). Gastric Cancer: The main feature of a cancer cell is loss of regulation of the process of cellular multiplication. The growth of normal cells is rigidly regulated. In cancer cells, however, this growth control mechanism is lost or altered, causing cancer cells to divide continuously and without regard for the tissue requirements. As malignant cells replicate they grow in an irregular pattern, infiltrating surrounding tissue. This can result in infiltration of the lymphatics and/or blood vessels. By gaining access to these vessels malignant cells can be carried to other sites within the patient's body, where they will replicate and grow. To ensure that these malignant cells receive nourishment to thrive, angiogenesis occurs, which is the formation of new blood vessels. If left untreated, these cells will result in localized recurrence of the cancer and eventual spread. The spread of the malignant cells extends outward from the original tumour (Gilbey et al., 2004, 903-911). Surgery is the main modality of treatment of gastric cancer with very poor survival (Balmain, 2001, 77-82). The development of an individualized treatment plan for a patient must take
